…the next day we were to see Luxor, if we lived. And how she opened before us! The wind deadened to a perfect calm, the Nile spread out to a perfect lake. Karnak and Luxor came in sight on the eastern bank; the heads of the Colossi and the Ramesseum appeared out of the dessert.
We landed, and ran up to Luxor, to see her temple before dark. In the evening we went to Karnak; the night was dark, the moon had betrayed us. Nothing can equal the first impression of seeing Luxor.
